Becoming a High-Performance Leader: Breakthrough Mindset

Being an effective leader is all about having the right mindset.  Sometimes, everything falls into place effortlessly – changes happen smoothly, and great things get done.  Other times, it feels like we’re stuck.  The key difference?  Our mindset.  High-performance leadership kicks in when we step out of our usual thinking and embrace what is sometimes called the fundamental state of leadership.  In this state, we naturally bring out our best selves, take on big goals, stick to our core values, show genuine empathy, and welcome feedback and learning.

But some hurdles we put on ourselves stop us from reaching this peak mindset.  Let’s look at them and how to get past them:

  1. Not Seeing Alternatives:  Break free from habits and norms by asking questions like: When have we done things differently before?  Who might have a new and fresh approach?

  2. Feeling Hopeless: Beat that “giving up” feeling with simple moves:
    • Think about times you’ve succeeded in similar situations before.
    • Set goals to learn instead of trying to achieve perfection.
    • Get others involved for new perspectives.
    • Tackle big challenges one step at a time.

  3. Not Enough Time: We all feel time-crunched, but we can fix it by:
    • Trusting others with tasks.
    • Finding and fixing what’s slowing us down.
    • Dealing with potential conflicts first.

  4. Not Seeing the Need for Leadership: Even if it doesn’t seem necessary, leadership can always make things better.  Encourage others to think about how their work affects people and how they can take it from good to great.

Leadership is about unlocking everyone’s potential, including your own.  We often hold back because we think we’re stuck with no choices, no hope, no time, or no need.  Those thoughts are just fear talking.  By facing them head-on and being fearless, you can hit that fundamental state of leadership, making real positive changes happen.
